Safety in Jordan

Safety in Jordan

Jordan has a low crime rate and is considered safe for tourists. Violent crime is extremely rare, and petty theft is uncommon compared to many destinations.

  • Stay aware of your surroundings — especially in crowded markets and public spaces, and keep an eye on personal items to avoid petty theft
  • Avoid demonstrations or political gatherings, which can be unpredictable.
  • Night travel caution:  try not to walk alone in unfamiliar areas at night
  • Local hospitality: Jordanians are known for their kindness and respect toward visitors. If you need help, locals are usually eager to assist.
  • Political stability: Jordan remains politically stable. All major tourist sites — Amman, Petra, Wadi Rum, Jerash, Dead Sea — are peaceful and well-patrolled.

  • Solo travelers: Both men and women can travel alone safely. Use the same precautions you would anywhere else.

Female / Solo Travelers

Jordan is generally safe and welcoming and is one of the safest countries in the Middle East for solo travelers, including women. Violent crime is rare, but cultural awareness goes a long way.

  • Dress modestly: long pants/skirts, tops covering shoulders and cleavage. You don’t need a headscarf unless entering mosques.
  • Public attention happens—mostly stares, not harassment. Ignoring it usually works best.
  • Firm but polite boundaries: A simple “La, shukran” (No, thank you) is effective.
  • Avoid walking alone late at night in quiet areas, especially outside Amman.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and trust your feeling if something doesn’t feel right
  • Have a list of local emergency numbers handy
  • Don’t accept rides unless it is from someone you know or a registered taxi driver
